This thick pencil and me go back to a long way … Student days.
Going to take this as part of our workshop – a tool to use to help loosen up when drawing architecture.
I used to sketch with this often….
The blending tool (not sure of exact name) is great for creating shading. Got this idea from a wonderful book 'fast sketching techniques'. I was using my fat pencil way before I came across that book – but it gave me some more ideas.

In the States, the blending tool is called a stump. (Sorry for the typo in the last comment–it is 5:39 am here.)
Blending tool "stump" are also known as tortillions forgive me if I spelt it wrong, very handy.
In jail its common to just use a rolled up piece of scrap paper. (not that I've ever been in jail)
