Planning and Dreaming (reviewing my 2010 trip sketchbooks)

January 23, 2016 | 10 Comments

Just a quick weekend post….

Saturday Morning: Nothing like a visit to my favorite cafe The Missing Piece at Macquarie Centre to start my weekend – especially as I am doing some serious planning this morning while I sip my latte. Got lots of exciting projects to map out this year. Love the background buzz in this cafe.

So what I am I planning? I will be revealing more about big projects for 2016 over the next few weeks, but I can tell you now that I am spending time looking through sketches and photos from previous trips to the UK in preparation for my July trip associated with the Urban Sketchers Symposium in Manchester. Early bird registration for this event will be opening soon – I am looking forward to seeing many of you there.

But in the meantime… I want to share with you a photo of Rèinigeadal, Harris (Isle of Lewis) from 2010. One of the more remote parts of Scotland I have been to (and sketched!) – the first road access to this hamlet was in 1990 but it is a thriving place now!?! As my sister lives in this part of the world (but not in Rèinigeadal itself!) I am hoping to visit her this year and hoping for lots of days like this one – warm and sunny. Yes… I’m dreaming!

So here are a few photos of my 2010 sketchbook from my last visit to the Isle of Lewis.

Ah! I love Scotland so much!

And the only photo I have of me in action from back then. On the beach at North Tolsta, Lewis.

A special wave to all the Scottish readers – especially those that live on islands in the Inner or Outer Hebrides!

Gorgeous photos and sketches Liz. The Scottish Islands are on my list of places to go in the next few years. Just found out that our booked holiday clashes with the Manchester dates – very disappointed. I'll have to live it through your blog instead.

Ahh Liz. I love Scotland too. We are booked for two weeks in the north of Scotland in September. Harris and Lewis definitely on the schedule! Your sketches are the perfect thing on this -14 Canadian morning. You are like a great corresponding friend. Thank you

Greetings once again from the Isle of Tiree. I visited Lewis for the first time about a year ago. The stones at Callanish are awesome. I've nearly visited Harris twice but somehow something always comes in the way – which is a shame because I've heard it's beautiful. As ever thanks for the inspirational emails.

Lovely photos – I recognised the first one immediately although I've never been to the Hebrides. My friend Pam has not long returned however, and gave me a book of sketches by Mairi Hedderwick. They're such a pleasure to look at and the story that goes with them is so interesting.

Now I plan to turn over a new leaf myself, especially after your post early this month about blogging. My new leaves are a) to respond to your posts, b) to return to my own blog after nearly two years, and c) to do more drawing. My blog is not a business blog which is why it can mellow with impunity; indeed I might start a fresh one for sketching. I love to have comments too which is why I will leave some for you. Mind you, your posts fill my head with so many responses that I can't keep track of them. Many of them would require a long morning coffee or an evening yarn with a splendid red.

When I was working for myself (for more than twenty years), I think generosity was an important mainstay for business. I very much appreciate it when I read your material. Thank you.

    See you soon in Melbourne.
    Ros.

Any comment when you can are very special – thanks!

  • Liz Steel says:

Hi Sandra! hope all going well!

  • Liz Steel says:

Hi Gordon!!! You are winning the prize for my most remote reader at the moment!

  • Liz Steel says:

thanks Christine – I am glad to send some green to -14… I cannot even imagine what that would be like!

  • Liz Steel says:

oh! Sandra what a pity…. but I hope to blog so you can follow along!
