One Week 100 people is on again: 8-12 March 2021

I’m excited to announce that Marc Taro Holmes and I are hosting another One Week 100 People challenge this year: 8-12 March. It’s the fifth year in a row!

The goal is to sketch as many people as you can in 5 days. It’s a short but intense challenge and one that has done a lot for my confidence to sketch people in public. There is something special about striving for a big goal of 100 people sketches! You can find out full details here on Marc’s info page.

Last year this challenge was held on the week when things started changing! I organised three sketching meets – two at my local cafe and one on Friday evening in the city.

The cafe meets were a lot of fun (especially when we were joined by two sketchers from New Zealand one day, and  some locals who were happy to be sketched on the other day) but I knew that week that cafe visits were about to end, so they were a little bittersweet.

I’m unbelievably thankful that everything is so under control in Australia that I should be able to do my 100 people sketches out on location again this year.

But for many of you this will not be possible and that is totally fine as sketching from photos has always been part of this challenge.

I normally spend the week supplementing my on-location sketching with evening research – sketching from anatomy books and photos of people. I think that I’ll do that again this year as I almost completely stopped sketching people in 2020. So I’m super excited that this challenge will get me into groove again!

Please share the news with your friends!

Will you be joining?

Glad to hear that Australia is on the way back to normal. In Germany we’re still living in lockdown. No restaurants and cafes open. 🙁 So, no chance to draw people on location for me. (My Office is at home 😉 )

Liz, I credit your One week 100 people for my progress in sketching people in the last 2 years so I will absolutely be there. Now, that week is going to be a difficult one for me this year but I will do my best and give it a try. Thanks so much for being so generous with your time, your ideas, your advices and for sharing them with us.

    Hello
although quite a beginner and not particularly fond of portraits, I got into the game in 2020 Oneweek100people… and had a lot of fun. I find it particularly difficult to adjust the details to the size of the portrait… anatomical studies are always interesting but then how can we not try to put too much detail in the quick portraits we try to do during our urbansketching outings ?… where we are more on the quick sketch than on the portrait drawing.

Hi, I live in San Francisco. I’ve drawn people before in a Drawing Class but it’s been years. Happy to try again with this group motivation. Sue

This sounds like so much fun! I’ve enjoyed Liz’s Sketch Book design class, which I just finished, and I think after also having taken foundations, this would be a fun challenge! I’ve been doing more drawings on location but have never really included people so this will afford me the opportunity to do so! Ready to get after it!

I am up for the challenge. I have zero experience drawing people so I expect I will be doing alot of laughing at myself.

Great stuff Liz. I really enjoyed popping over the ditch last year to join you in the cafe session and it’s a pity it isn’t quite working this year. I’ll be doing it in NZ this year. Take care Dx

    Yes, I’m in….

  • Bernadette says:

Yes, I’m going to do my best to reach the quota. I’m anxious to begin, it’s quite a challenge.

I just did a trial spread in my wee Moleskin sketchbook outdoors at a local cafe. So much fun! I too rarely draw people so this sounds like a great way to get going. I’ll keep it light and not worry about study, just use my eyes and my hand…and have a few laughs. And I might slip in a crow and a dog or two, like I did today!

I misremembered this as One Week One Hundred Faces, and between taking notes for a two-hour Zoom meeting sketched faces. Always fun to how much improvement there can be in even half an hour (I hadn’t sketched faces in a very long time). Just practicing for the March 8-12 stretch. Thanks much — this is sounding like fun —

  • Ann Robertson says:

I’m in! Already doing a personal 30-days of drawing/painting challenge, so 5 days of it will be people!
    Perfect timing.

Hi Liz, I signed up for the 100 People facebook group as soon as you announced this. It starts tomorrow and I’m still ‘pending’ for posting access on the site. I see you are an admin for this group. Any suggestions? I’ll still do the 100 people if I don’t get in, but it would be more fun to post. Thanks

    • Liz Steel says:

HI Susan – hope you are in now – I’m not really on facebook anymore. Marc is active there though.
