New workshops: Complex scenes with edges and shapes

August 28, 2018 | Leave your thoughts

I’m pleased to announce that I’m running two morning workshops in September as part of the USK Sydney 10×10 Programme.

I have two workshops on the same topic, but in different locations, both in Sydney.

I taught this workshop in the CBD earlier this year, and one in Miller’s Point last year. Both were perfect locations.

More about the workshops…

Fast sketching of complex scenes with edges and shapes.

The two most important skills to have when sketching complex scenes are being able to achieve a relatively accurate composition of the main elements and being able to simplify all the details and colours into a few big shapes. If you can achieve this not only do you have a strong sketch, but you also have a way of working that will free you up to sketch faster.

In this workshop we will look at how to achieve this by first determining the important edges and the relationships between them and then abstracting the scene into main shapes of colour and value.

We will spend the first half of the workshop doing a few small thumbnails of edges and shapes. The second half will be devoted to working on one sketch (or more) combining line and colour based on the earlier studies.
