Sketching Gladesville Hospital with Jane (and some fun new pigments)

March 4, 2021 | 4 Comments

Today I had a lovely catch-up with my great sketching friend Jane Blundell. We headed to Gladesville Hospital (originally known as Tarban Creek Lunatic Asylum – it closed in 1993) for a few hours. After a little wander around we found a lovely shading spot to sit and sketch (and chat non-stop!) There are a lot of interesting buildings and spaces here and I want to return soon to explore the area some more.

As mentioned in my notes – I felt a little out of touch with sketching on location, doing paint-only and chatting at the same time! When I’m engaged in a conversation I have a tendency to over-work my washes… and that clock tower is a hard subject to do in my usual loose style.

Jane was just about to finish her sketch (see here) when I decided to have another go… and go a little wild!

Next Jane let me try the watercolour paints she made last week from 10 Provence earth pigments. How cool is that?  Find out more here.

All in all, it was a lovely day and it motivates me to get out sketching more!

    Hi Liz,

Nice to catch up on your activities with Jane!
I’m not familiar with that deep-welled plastic palette. What the name and source??
    Thanks. Joanna
