From the Archives: My first travel sketchbook!

One of the nice things about doing a big spring clean is coming across unexpected delights. This is one of them – my first attempt at travel journalling!

Rewind the clock about 20 years: I was in my early days studying architecture (my writing not fully architectural-ized yet) and this is one of the last family holidays that I went on. A week driving along the Murray river in winter.
Each day I attempted to do some little sketches of some silly things that happened during the day. We had so much fun and these sketches have brought it back.

One of the funny things about looking at it now is that I was sketching tea back then. I had no idea this obsession went back so far!

Drawn on A3 cartridge (11 x 16) – I experimented with different media each day (and didn’t finish D5!)..

I am a bit of a hopeless case when it comes to going through old stuff – I love going for a walk down memory lane and remembering old times. Not that the past is necessarily any better than the present – often it is not… But still I like a time warp every now and then.

  • Splendid! Love the "Encownters"! 🙂

How nice to still have your travel journal. How amazing that the style is there right from the off. The map of the route, the plan of the layout of the room where you stay and – most important of all – the telling of the story (not to mention the cups of tea!)

You are a storyteller as well as a great travel journal/sketchbook keeper.

You also haven't changed much visually either!

Oh Liz I really enjoyed this trip into your past journal 🙂 It's wonderful to see how your pages have progressed, yet still retain the humour (and tea shops) from the past. And I agree with Katherine – you haven't changed much in the intervening years.
    Happy New Year.

Great post! Thank you for sharing these memories with us!

  • I've always been curious – do they make you write a certain way in your studies? I kind of always imagined an architectural sketching and penmanship class…
