Reviewing my work and a public livestream next week

September 16, 2022 | 4 Comments

As mentioned previously…In the lead-up to the Live Version of my Watercolour On Location course, I’m sharing some of the Intro Lessons for free. (Sign up for them here)

And this means that I’m going through the exercises as well. The first one was to review some of our own sketches, do a thumbnail of each and then record notes about what worked, what we could do next time and/or ask questions.

So I did this using my recently completed sketchbook and it was such a useful exercise! Is this something you ever do?

The main aspects that I was looking at were focus/story, composition and pathways (how the eye is led through the sketch) and values. As I want my work to be lively and spontaneous I rarely plan my sketches in detail before I start. I decide on my focus and then just begin, pausing mid-sketch to review. (I discussed this approach in this recent article.)

So it was really insightful to do an objective review of my work and I realised two things:
1. I sometimes found it hard to get the right value while I was using the Pitt Pens
2. Even though I’m always thinking of values while I work, I want to consider them even more and especially in a ‘big picture’ way associated with the design and composition.

One thing is for sure… I’m REALLY looking forward to going through this course again. 🙂

If you have purchased Watercolour on Location in the past you already have access to these lessons inside the course. If you visit the Watercolour On Location classroom via My Courses at sketchingnow.com you’ll find these lessons in the Introduction section and also the instructions for joining the Live Version on the homepage.

I’m also hosting a public livestream on YouTube next week that is open for anyone to attend.

This will be a chance to connect with me in real-time as I go through the main concepts of the course and answer your questions. I can’t wait!

Here are the details:

It’s so helpful to see an example of reviewing one’s work! I’m excited about this class and looking forward to the Livestream!

I really appreciate you making a preview of the classes available. Right now I just don’t have time to commit to a full class, unfortunately. But I am keeping a careful track of the ones I want to purchase down the road a bit and I expect your previews will be a big help to me with regard to getting a sense of the overall “feel” and scope. I really enjoy your blog and expect I would very much enjoy a class in the future.
