Cuppa Tea Time - A repeating pattern

Time for another teacup sketch. I picked this one as it has a repeating pattern and I thought that I hadn’t sketched it recently. It turns out that I sketched it only a few months ago here.

I decided to do a few thumbnails to study the pattern a little more carefully than I have on previous occasions.

I then worked in my usual loose way (ie. not in a traditional way of pencil-ink-wash) making it up as I went along. I was using a mixed raw sienna colour (mixed De Atramentis Document Brown and Yellow) for the linework.

I decided I wanted to add some darker ink colour, so I got out one of the ink samples I recently bought from Goulet Pen and simply dipped my pen into a little of Noodlers Rome Burning ink. Aside: This is not something I would recommend people doing, but I had had a crazy intense day, it was late and I was too lazy to find a dip pen.

If you follow me on Instagram you might have seen that I had a little accident and managed to get ink on my hands, and a drop landed in the tea (the tea was just a prop – I wasn’t drinking from it). Check out how the ink separated into purple. I will definitely have to load up a pen and try this out.

Anyway, it was good to do a teacup sketch again – I haven’t been doing them lately and need to get back to doing them more regularly.

PS. A huge thank you to everyone who left a comment on Monday’s article about pausing my weekday posts. I want to reply to you all, but this week has been a little crazy.
Thank you again – I am so overwhelmed by the amazing audience I have – you’re the best!
