Back Home: The struggle to find time to sketch

July 3, 2017 | 1 Comment

Ah! it is the same every time! I arrive home from a big trip with the intention of doing more daily sketching, but life just seems to take over.

I’m thankful for my coffee sketch as at least it ensures I do something during the week days.

But of course, my pages are being filled slowly, day by day, so here is what I have done over the last two weeks:

LizSteel-19June-coffeespread
Loving my current approach to sketching my coffee: doing a weekly spread.

LizSteel-auditorium-building-take1
Sketching the extremely mundane views of life: from the carpark.
Trying to get my head around the scale and complexity of the buildings in Chicago while fighting jetlag.

LizSteel-chicago-planning
Starting to work on the prep for my USK Symposium workshop called “Lost and Found Structure.”

LizSteel-nexttrip-clothes-planning
Yes, another one of those clothes planning sketches.

LizSteel-FLW-sally-monkey
Trying to find some time for a little Frank Lloyd Wright reading (and sketching).
A messy page from a quick and distracted visit to a local cafe – including sketching a little boy’s pink monkey called Sally.

LizSteel-hotwater-bottles
Three half size hot water bottles – fun!

LizSteel-30June-coffeespread
This week’s coffee spread. Note: I love the different ways I can intepretate the colour and texture of the same cups.

LizSteel-textspread
Not much sketching during the week, so here is a B&W page.

LizSteel-auditorium-building-take2
Another attempt at the Audtorium Building  by Louis Sullivan. Take 3 is on the cards which you will see in the video below (which includes a few more pages!)
Please note: I will be sharing more about my workshop ideas and preparation soon!

So I haven’t been able to make to time to get out to do some sketching, but I am filling my pages and creating the record of my life at the moment.

So how about you? How has your sketching been going lately?
My blogging has been a little sparce in recent months, so I would love to catch up with what you have been up to lately.

Can’t wait to see your teacup dress! 🙂

All winter I did a simple still life (a single fruit) almost every day when I couldn’t sketch outdoors. But now, even though the weather is gorgeous, I find I still love doing a simple still life first thing in the morning (though not every day). Hopefully I’ll be able to sketch outdoors each day, but if I can’t, I feel good that at least I did the still life. Very similar to your daily teacups. It’s a ritual.
