My current Faber Castell Selections

August 27, 2022 | 9 Comments

As I’ve been playing with 6 different types of Faber Castell products in the last month, I thought it was time to document my current selections. So it was fun to do a number of colour charts yesterday and review what I’ve been carrying around.

As for how I’m organising and storing them… I’ve gotten a number of the Mead 5 Star pencil pouch (which I mentioned in my previous post) and each day I just choose which one I want to take out with me.

Top Row: Gold Faber Aqua Dual Tip Markers, Pitt Artist Pens (colours listed below), Albrecht Durer Watercolour Markers with a few Albrecht Durer Watercolour Pencils (colours listed below)

Bottom Row: Additional Pitt Artist Pens including some samples of the new Dual Tip Pitt Pens, Polychromos Coloured Pencils (colours are almost identical to my Albrecht Durer Watercolour Pencils selection) and the pen holder which I carry in my bag everywhere with me (made by friend Cecilia – it’s part of an early prototype for her wonderful Walkit bags) that contains a fude pen, a TWSBI Eco and my current collection of Albrecht Durer Watercolour Pencils (colours listed below).

Before I share my colour charts I have two comments:

1. These selections are still a work in progress. I’m not sharing these as definitive recommended sets! I’m merely documenting the colours I’m using currently and I plan to reduce these selections over time.

2. I’m working with Faber Castell Australia at the moment so most of these pencils and markers (with the exception of the Albrecht Durer WCPs) have been sent to me by them to test and use. I’m not being paid to produce artwork or create content for them so all my recent (and future) blog articles represent my own experiences and opinions as I explore each different tool and work out the best way to use them for my own sketching.

Okay… enough preamble… here are my current selections!

Albrecht Durer Watercolour Pencils

The column on the left represents the standard set of colours that I’ve been using personally (and in my online courses/ workshops) for many many years. See this article for more

The column on the right shows new colours that I’m currently exploring. Of these, my favourite four are Cream, Light Cobalt Turquoise, Earth Green and Beige Red.

I’m using practically the same set in Polychromos Colours Pencils as well.

Albrecht Durer Watercolour Markers

I mentioned a few weeks ago that as the AD Markers are quite bulky I was thinking of swapping out the colours I wasn’t using much for AD Watercolour Pencils. And so this is what this selection represents.

I realised mid-way through this colour chart that I had included a Dark Indigo WCP which is not necessary. You will notice that thanks to the Faber Castell Indexing system a lot of colours are the same! However some of the colours in the marker range are darker (at full strength) such as Earth Green.

Pitt Artist Pens

Finally here are the Pitt Artist Pens that I’m currently using. Some of the colours are a bit lighter in the Pitt Pen version (eg. Deep Scarlet Red) but all are very usable! I would like to reduce this selection a bit but at the moment I am using all of these colours so I’m not quite sure how I can eliminate any of them!

So there you have it…I hope you have found these colour charts interesting. 🙂

I’m having so much fun finding ways to use these pencils and markers (either by themselves or combined with others) in my everyday sketching.

I love working with my Pitt markers and have been enjoying your use of them this past month!

But what are these new, magical sounding dual tip Pitt pens you mention?! The only real downside I’ve ever felt with the Pitts was their smaller size when needing to cover a larger area. FC used to have big versions in all the colors but they were discontinued before I could try them (they still have them in black and white).

Thanks very much for this! I’m using Albrecht Durer Watercolour Pencils so it’s good to see your selection. I’ve recently developed an interest in Pitt Pens so it’s also good to see which ones you’ve chosen.

Are you using various nibs of the Pitt artist pens? Brush, billets, etc? I bought a few colors in assorted nibs to try.

    • Liz Steel says:

Hi Katherine, I’ve just been using the brush tip… but I do have a few samples of the soon-to-be-released dual tip – with a big brush and a fineliner point.

  • Hi Liz, Did you buy the AD watercolour markers in the box of 20?

Could you tell me the lightfastness for the Durer Markers you selected? I only got the portrait set and was disappointed two of them were high and three were medium.

    • Liz Steel says:

As all of my work is done inside sketchbooks I don’t worry about lightfastness so much. I’m away at the moment but will look into it when I’m back home.
