TasTrip14: In Launceston

June 5, 2014 | 10 Comments

I arrived in Launceston yesterday and have already managed to sketch a few wonderfully complex Victorian buildings ..such as this one opposite Brisbane St mall (and finally have some fast wifi to blog)
And below the fantastic Chalmers church – wow! I want to sketch this again before I leave!

Finished the day with an amazing visit to Leoni Duff’s studio. I have known of her for years (through church connections) and it was wonderful to finally meet her, chat about all kinds of things, approaches to art and teaching and see her amazing work IRL. I also loved her still life collection and setup! Please visit her site and check out her work

Our work couldn’t be more different but we have a LOT in common. Thanks Leonie for making the time for me yesterday!

Today: I gave a lecture at the school of architecture UTAS. ..About sketching architecture – my approach and how important sketching is to the design process. It was a lot of fun and wonderful to meet staff and students and get a tour of their amazing school. Wow! what facilities they have and the work produced is impressive. it was especially encouraging to see the use of drawing and watercolour in the student’s work (along with digital imagery of course!)

I started with a Le Corbusier quote which you can read on the side bar of my sketching architecture blog

I spent an hour at QVMAG preparing for Saturday’s workshop and then did this crazy sketch of the wonderful Albert Hall before heading back to my hotel for a Skype interview (which might go live next week)

This trip (which is really a work trip) has been a lot of fun but a lot of work..only 2 out of my 11 commitments to go….
