Recent sketches: Bits and pieces

September 28, 2020 | 9 Comments

I’m doing a fair amount of sketching at the moment so there seems to be a lot to catch up on since my last article of everyday sketches.

This article covers the last few weeks of work and includes two sketchbooks – 8×10 Stillman and Birn Alpha softcover and Goldline Natural Sketchbook (180gsm). Both books have been great to use!

Check out this Instagram video for a full flip-through of the Alpha book.

I’ve got a lot going on at the moment, so I’m not focusing so much on my sketching at the moment. But I’m still trying to document the events of each day and do a little local urban sketching (sometimes experimenting with new techniques).

I’m continuing to have fun with page layouts as I start planning my upcoming course – Sketchbook Design. Some pages are more successful than others, but I’m happy with the amount of sketching I’m doing lately!

It’s all about sticking with it even on the days when the inspiration is not there or I don’t have much time.

So how is your sketching going at the moment? Are you still finding inspiration in your everyday life or is it a struggle? I would love to hear from you in the comment section below.

  • Hey Liz! I was wondering what you think about the stable sketching rig? They look like an interesting design..Thanks Eileen

      Hi Eileen!
ah ha! I was wondering who would ask me about that 🙂

It’s very nice! I haven’t tested it properly yet but think that it suits smaller sketchbooks best. My corplast support board is probably more flexible and comfortable to use… but definitely not as cool! 🙂

I understand the entire top is magnetized. I am curious if that really works because many of the magnetized items I’ve bought don’t work as well as those I made myself,

      • Liz Steel says:

It’s working ok as the whole top area has a magnet so it connects palette base and the two lids. Haven’t full tested it yet though.

  • Kate Powell says:

Where in AU do you find the best buys on watercolor paper? I want to buy from them and send it to a firend there, or give her a gift card.

I caught your last question… I still work full time in our business and we have a war going on in our city between right-wingers, law enforcement, and blacks. I’ve not seen anything like it in my lifetime and it is not being well reported and this has caused me so much distress. But what helps is sketching it… From pics, because at my age with arthritis I am nto going out and hanging out in a protesting war zone but I have a few reporter friends that let me sketch from pictures and I pic the ones that make me sad or feeling hopeless and then sketch them in m own ways. It is healing.

I decided since I can not travel, I would travel via my sketch book. I am drawing/painting iconic housing from around the world including Vietnamese Shop Houses and the Icelandic Ironclad housing. Perhaps Chinese Hutongs, California bungalows or one of my favourites, the tiny houses of Tilting, Fogo Island, Newfoundland will be on my on-going travels. If possible, I like to do a plan view too. Of course this is all interspersed with items and events in daily life. Looking forward to the sketchbook course in 2021. I am using a Stillman and Birn, Alpha, square book right now.
