I just discovered that I never posted this sketch which was done back in June when I was using an A4 sketchbook…
This sketch of St James church in the City was completed in about 20 minutes in fading light on a very cold day (Sydney’s definition of cold) and also while chatting to the Rector who was returning from his afternoon jog!
I don’t go out of my way to draw using curvilinear perspective but at times it’s the best solution such as this occasion when I was sitting very close to this church. I wanted to include the whole building and so curving my lines was the only way to fit it all in.
This was a lot of fun!
Hmm… I should do this type of sketch more often!
Here is the final version with a pale sky added.

Thank you for posting this! I feel a bit lost at sea facing curved perspective. Did you ever consider offering an online course on complex perspective? I did your excellent “Building” and both “Watercolour”.
I have also taken those courses and would love it if Liz did a Perspectives course! We can hope!
Hi Terri – it’s on my list – one day! In the meantime the Buildings course has a perspective lesson!
Hi Benedicte – yes I do have a plan one day to expand the current Perspective lesson in Buildings into its own course.
Oh that would be great. Can’t wait for lessons on stairs, multiple vanishing points, slanted surfaces… But this let us time to review the basics. The principles in “Buildings” are very clearly explained, but need to be practiced a lot till they become “second nature”!
I have only done one curved perspective. It was a river scene where I wanted to include both ends of a bend. It was interesting and I enjoyed the challenge. Nice work for 20 minutes!

Thanks for the post ! I’ve participated to a workshop with Lapin back in May at the USK France meeting in Toulouse and since then I’ve tried a couple of sketching with the curvilinear technic. below is a link to my last one, and although not perfect (I’ve noted a number of mistales while sketching it that give ways for future improvements !) at- least it has allowed me to complete this sketch while I had failed at doing so last summer.
