CA-TX Trip: Favourite Sketch

October 12, 2017 | 3 Comments

This sketch of the Golden Gate Bridge is my favourite from my recent trip, and the funny thing is, that midway through, I thought it was a total disaster. This is very unusual because most of my favourites (you can see a collection here) are sketches where I feel in control and in the flow.

Thanks to Lousia Sketcherman (Rob’s wife), I have a video record of my saying something along the lines of “I am not sure that I will be able to resurrect this sketch.”

Looking at the stills from the videos it seems silly that I was so concerned but it was because what was on the page was not what I was trying to achieve. In particular, there were some inaccuracies which were bugging me.

So the moral of the story is keep going and don’t despair. You never know when ‘a favourite’ is in the making.

(Please note: I use the term ‘favourite’ not ‘masterpiece’… this is a very important distinction for me when I am sketching)

I am working up to getting over my sixty years’ conditioning to think that i can’t draw–just as I was conditioned to believe that I was doomed to always have poor handwriting, until I realized that I simply hadn’t been properly taught. I have decided to take an approach to making drawings that do not endanger Rembrandt’s reputation that is similar to one I adopted for traveling. When traveling, I NEVER get lost; from time to time, though, I do have adventures. I figure that any drawing that doesn’t seem to go right will be a study! Nice one you have there.
