Sketching my way through my teacup collection: #3, 4 and 5

March 6, 2019 | 2 Comments

Here is a quick update on my latest project.

Teacup No. 3.

This is Hong Kong Blue by Coalport (a gift from a friend before I started collecting teacups). It’s a gorgeous fine bone china cup, saucer and plate. The cup shape is lovely but I’m a touch disappointed in how plain the saucer is (from a sketching point of view – in real life it is very elegant!)

Teacup No. 4

This is 1930s Polka Rose, part of a set celebrating Royal Albert’s 100 year anniversary.

Note to self: Don’t sketch a fancy teacup late at night (ie. post 9.30pm) as my application of paint might loose some subtlety. This is in fact a very elegant pastel cup and it turned out a bit darker! But it’s okay as one of the things I love about my loose approach to teacup sketching is the fact that every time I sketch a cup it turns out differently.

Teacup No. 5

Another from my Royal Albert 100 years set – 1910s Duchess. How loosely can I sketch one of my most decorative teacups? I needed some coloured ink to help define some edges.

Whilst I’m really enjoying drinking out of different cups. I’m actually finding it hard to make the time to sketch the cup each week. I think there is some unwritten rule in my head that it has to be a ‘good sketch’ each time and that has become a little bit of a barrier. So I think I might try and mix it up a little.

Thanks Liz! Where do you store all of your beautiful teacups Liz? If they are openly displayed, I’d love to see a sketch of them all.

No not openly displayed at the moment as I live (temporarily in a tiny apartment) – some are in boxes so it’s nice to get them out.
