Teacup Collection 27: Taking risks

March 25, 2020 | 3 Comments

As I’ve been sketching through my teacup collection there has been a voice in my head telling me that I need to do a ‘good sketch’ of each cup. As a result I’ve often found myself waiting until I was in the right mood, or had enough time, to sketch the current cup. So today I decided just to go for it, experiment a little and take lots of risks. This is what happened on my page.

It was so much fun to let go of the control of watercolour in this sketch and just let it do it’s own thing.

This is another Royal Albert cup which is part of the 100 years set. It’s the new design 1990s – Bouquet, replacing the lilac cup I always enjoy sketching. I like this new yellow cup but my usual view when drinking out of it doesn’t really explain its design adequately.

Part of this project was to drink my way through my collection as well – ie. to use each cup before I sketch it, and then once  sketched, I put it away and get a new one.

I feel like doing another version of this yellow cup but perhaps I should just move on…

And if you are wondering about the red lettering see more here.

I think its funny how challenging it is to just let it go with this kind of experiment, isnt it? I love what you done here! It is expressive and somehow, looking to those mixing color stains I feel like I could touch the cup. Thank you for one more amazing work!

    Hi Liz,

Love this cup sketch, Liz. My first thought was that it looks as tho sunlight is falling through the bone china and bathing the saucer in reflected light. Exquisite.

I’m really laughing over you and Rob lying on the floor sketching?
