Four versions of my pink cup: 2014-2016

March 2, 2021 | 4 Comments

Most mornings I spend at least 30 minutes going through old blogposts – updating the images because they were originally embedded from Flickr or still hosted on blogspot. It’s a massive project, but one that I absolutely love doing!

Today I was working through a few posts from 2016 and came across this sketch of my pink ‘Melbourne Teacup’ and wondered whether it was the first time I had done it paint-only (direct watercolour).

I then checked my ‘pink cup‘ tag and discovered three other interesting versions…

A 2015 watercolour pencil version

and a cross-hatched version (this is VERY rare – perhaps the only time I have done one?)

And then a loose ink and wash cup from 2014. (This was done on Beta paper – the others are all on Alpha)

Looking back there are two significant things about the 2016 version. Not only the absence of line but also it shows the change in lighting which happened around that time.

And for those of you who want to see a photo of the cup – here is one!

I hope you enjoyed this trip down memory lane!

I think I like the 2014, the last one you posted. Do you have a special cabinet for your teacups? It seems you enjoy drinking tea out of all of them instead of letting them gather dust. That is so neat.

So awesome of you to post the photo with the pictures Liz! Thankyou! It’s really interesting seeing the differences.

Liz, I will never tire of seeing your work and especially the teacup collection you so expertly paint! Q: the version above done in brown ink- the very rare rendering- do you remember which ink that is that you used? It looks like a sepia, but it isn’t as dark as that…anyway, many thanks!

Love the side by side of the different sketches of this teacup. Really shows off how expressive these are, as well as the various techniques. So much inspiration in one collection!
