A few weeks before my recent workshop on Cockatoo Island, I visited the island to do the required prep (decide on locations etc) and also to do some sketching for myself. I managed to do four sketches – each one used a different technique.
I also wanted to test two things:
1. using Neocolors standing up (I carry them in a small plastic box, so I wanted to test how I would hold/access them)
2. testing out the new Lintner palette (which you can see in the above photos)
I don’t have enough definitive opinions on both yet, so I won’t be able to publish an article here on the blog, but I am sharing my initial thoughts inside my Sketching Adventure Community on Patreon.
I was also exploring the theme of Going to the Edge. (If you have missed it, as part of the activity that happens inside my Sketching Adventure Community on Patreon I’m setting a conceptual theme each month to work through. In March we explored going to the edge of our sketchbook pages.)
It was great to be able to do so many sketches during a short visit to the island!

I love these sketches Liz! And really enjoyed the course at Cockatoo Island, I’ll have to go back to sketch some more, such a great location!! I highly recommend to anyone interested in this course!
thanks Heather – was lovely to see you again and have you in the group. You did great work!
Sorry *workshop (not course)
Hi Liz, long time!! Do you have a pre-production Lintner palette, or are they now available commercially? Conceptually, their whole integrated system looks brilliant for plein air sketching, but I can’t see where to purchase their gear yet.
I love the way your work is getting looser, freer with the years – much admired by me.
Cheers
Hi Peter – yes, long time no see! I do have a test version of the cast aluminium and a prototype (3D printer) version of the plastic model. I think Phil will be announcing a kick-starter in a month or two. It’s a very impressive system and top quality!
Gorgeous sketches! I love how the mixed media fits the industrial vibe of the cranes and location. Such a great series of sketches.
Hi Jamie – yes the textures on the island are crying out for mixed media IMHO!
