Now that I’ve finally finished sharing my France adventures, it’s time to catch up on my everyday sketching.
This month we have the theme of Starting on Colour over in my Sketching Adventure Community on Patreon and I’m using this theme to explore collage.
I did a really fun workshop at the Urban Sketchers Symposium in Toulouse (see more about it here) and wanted to see if I could use it in my everyday sketching. It is a very different way of working (and much slower too), but I’m absolutely loving exploring colours, texture and pattern!
Sometimes I cut out shapes to make the main parts of the scene, and other times I use the collaged paper as a background (similar to pre-painted pages).
I’ve also been using acrylic markers as my main tool this month. Collage makes so much more sense to me now that I’ve been using a lot of opaque media.

I absolutely love challenging myself to do new things and then sharing it all with my Patreons. I’m looking forward to our monthly livestream later this week to go through all my work and discuss aspects of this technique.

And it’s fun to paint your own collage paper or print it with a Gelli plate. And is especially fun to use found papers. I try to be on the lookout for papers that would work for collage that can often be found for free.
Yes… using all those paper types except for Gelli Plate (which I have so far resisted!):-)
These sketches with collage are just great! I started adding collage to my outdoor sketches occasionally and it is really helpful with composition. Sometimes I put the collage on first and sometimes after. I kind of like putting it on randomly before sketching.
I really enjoy using GLOO glue sticks. I get them in the US from Jet Pens. I use the one that has a blue glue stick which has a small amount of very pleasant perfume. I don’t usually like perfumed stuff but this one is really pleasant. Mildly floral and it works great. I like the container which is square so it doesn’t roll around on the work surface much.
Your use of them is very clever and fun!!

Thanks Patricia – I have heard of GLOO sticks but haven’t seen them in Australia to date
They are a Japanese product. I’m lucky I can get them here they are really nice. I think they stick as good as any glue stick possibly can and better than others I’ve used. So the next time you’re in Japan you could pick a couple up!
