Thinking about my niece and the Isle of Harris

Just a quick article to share a page I did yesterday in preparation for the Sketchbook Design livestream that night. The inspiration for the spread was my niece’s question on a recent Skype call “When is Aunty Liz coming to visit again?”

While I was sketching, I was thinking about some of the fun day trips I’ve had over the years to the Isle of Harris with my niece (and sister, brother in law and nephew as well!)

Last week in Sketchbook Design as we looked at open compositions there were a lot of great questions about when to and how to overlap sketches, how to white space and how to deal with simple line drawings juxtaposed with watercolour sketches. (BTW last night we decided that juxtaposition was the word of the week!)

And related to these questions was the issue about how to create useful open corners and varied edges.

So I was also thinking about these things while I was doing this page.

Finally… here is a photo is of my niece point to a map of Harris from my 2016 visit. I’m so unbelievably thankful for all the opportunities I’ve had over the years to spend time with her and the family.

This brings tears to my eyes, Liz. Lockdown is not numbers but people, including your sweet niece wanting to see her Aunty.

I’m glad you’re blogging frequently again.
