Melbourne2024: Outing to Colac

August 5, 2024 | 4 Comments

Getting back to sketches from my recent Melbourne trip…

My friend E took me on a second outing – this time towards Colac via a few small historic country towns. This day reminded me a lot of my epic road trip back in 2021 (see here for all the articles on this 6-week adventure!)

It was a wonderful day to be driving through the countryside – the weather kept changing from bright sun to passing showers. So dramatic! Thankfully it didn’t rain when we were out of the car.

Here is a map that shows Colac and also the other places I visited during my time in Melbourne.

The first stop was Inverleigh, and I managed to sketch out a cafe that described the main elements of the town. (At the bottom of this article, you will see my rushed tea and muffin (half) that I sketched.)

I love driving through the countryside and it was particularly enjoyable on this occasion due to the changing weather.

Watching a shower of rain come towards us…

… and then the next minute, it was sunny again.

The next town was Wichelsea – we didn’t stop, so I didn’t do a sketch of it.

Shortly after that, we arrived at Colac, and the first stop was the lake.

A quick sketch of a tree with interesting gum nuts (they were much larger than normal – see the page below for my lifesize drawings of them).

A walk down the main street looking for somewhere to have lunch…

and a view from our lunch spot of the impressive War Memorial.

On the drive home I did several very simple sketches recording the countryside.

I wished I had done this in the morning as the drive home wasn’t as interesting.

Back home and another roast dinner! Yum – what a way to finish a great day!

And here are the full spreads from the outing.

Great sketches! Looks like the watercolor pencil was an excellent medium for on the road, sketch the passing scenery sketches! So glad to see your full pages, too! It makes it easier to see how the sketching happened across the day!
