Backlighting

This month inside my Sketching Adventure Community on Patreon, we have the theme of ‘darks‘.

There are lots of different aspects possible to this theme  – focusing on shadow shapes and starting with the darks, painting black objects, using more dark colours, night sketching.

I’m exploring all of these… but I’m also doing a series of sketches containing early-morning backlit subjects and I’m really thinking about the values of the light side vs the dark side. (BTW Value was our February theme!)

I’m also continuing to use a new triad I put together during our ‘three’ theme in March (see the bottom of this article and the comment section for more about it… until I have time to write a dedicated blog article on it).

And you might also notice that in the top image, I’m still using Framing (our April theme) and Inktense (something I discovered using January’s Unused Supplies theme)

Hmmm, this year, the monthly themes from our Sketching Adventure Community on Patreon are really having a lasting impact on my everyday sketching!

Love that tree in your first sketch!

    So cool.

What an exciting theme, Liz! Both those examples are so inspiring and make me want to drop everything (the frying pan, in this instance) and rush out with my paints. Can’t wait for the Travel Sketching live version to start, to see how these themes are influencing your work.

Thanks Kirsten – yes it’s a fun theme for sure. Glad you will be part of the Travel Sketching cohort!

Liz, I love your tree in the first sketch. Would you demonstrate it please? I like the way you mingle ideas into your live streams, and hope to see this tree again. I am taking Travel Sketching with you now and am amazed by your 7 line theory.

Hi Virginia – I did some similar demos during the Live Version of Watercolour earlier this year (Lesson 2) – do you have that course?
So glad you are in Travel Sketching and like the 7-line technique!

Hi Liz, I really love this (patreon) challenge…thanks for that!
I’ve searched in vain in my own photo collection for examples so I can practice a bit more. In one of your courses (I don’t remember which one), you mentioned a photo database, and I wonder if I can find examples there? Thanks!
