Sketching during a big move

March 20, 2024 | 10 Comments

If somehow you’ve missed it… I’ve recently moved home (and studio) and I wanted to sketch as much as I could during the crazy times associated with a big move.

The last time I moved it was a much smaller task. I only intended to be in Lindfield for 6-12 months (it turned out to be 7 years!) so I only moved the essentials (the rest was packed and sent to my storage unit later). I remember finding it hard to sketch and only managed a coffee sketch most mornings (see here).

This time the move was much bigger and except for the move day itself I managed to get out for a morning walk and coffee and to do some kind of a sketch.

As mentioned in a recent article, I’ve been finding it hard to focus on my sketching due to the physical and mental effort involved in moving (and by the way I loved the whole process thanks to the fact that I was able to give myself time and managed to stick to my schedule). So I’m really happy that I managed to sketch on location most days!

I generally didn’t have the energy to pull my paints out and some days a line drawing was all I was comfortable achieving. But I’m pleased with the record I have of the last few weeks. The incomplete or rushed sketches are the perfect way to remember it!

You will also see a few quick sketches of some of my dad’s tools. For every task we did, he would have a different special tool perfect for the job. I’ll share more about the new place once it’s a little more organised but in the meantime here are my recent sketches…

I hope that you have had some time for sketching in recent weeks.

Happy settling in Liz. Love the sketches of the tools! And your ladder! So evocative of what they are used for and what is being achieved, by whom!

Thanks Ginie. My dads tools are the coolest objects to sketch – wish I had more time to do them justice!
