This is what I told myself the other morning when I did this sketch. But it’s not quite accurate!
‘Every few days, something a bit different’ would be technically more correct, but when something different appears on my page during my morning sketching routine, it feels as if every time I make a mark on my page, something new COULD happen.
This is what keeps my motivation and inspiration alive.
As I mentioned in an article a few weeks ago, some days, when I open my sketchbook to sketch, I feel like trying something different, and other days, I go through the motions. But I never know when something will get me excited!
This sketch might look the same to you as my other work, but the morning that I did it I had some new thoughts – ideas that I can explore this week as I continue to sketch local houses. I’m not going to share these new ideas right now, but the important thing is that I have a routine that constantly inspires me. Maybe not every day, but frequently!
And so my message for today is to create a routine that enables you to fit sketching into your daily life and to periodically try something new. Don’t get stuck in a rut doing the same thing over and over – try mixing it up instead!

Thanks for these thoughts, Liz! I love that even after years of sketching, new ideas and inspirations are emerging for you. I appreciate the encouragement to create a routine that is stable but allows room for change. I look forward to hearing your latest thoughts!
Liz, it’s so good to read that you are constantly (if not every day 🙂 ) inspired. I think we are often too impatient and want to be inspired daily, but it’s good to just go through the motions for a while and keep going. Art is so good for us. For me, I get excited thinking that I have no idea what might turn up next in my sketchbook. It amazes me when I look back through some of mine.
