I spent a number of years of my life living in Epping and earlier this week I had a spare 1.5 hours to explore its streets.
I haven’t been back since I left 7.5 years ago, and there have been a lot of changes. Not one of the 3 cafes or the 3 Thai restaurants that I used to frequent is still there, and some parts of Epping are a little rundown, which is a bit sad. However, I think it’s more interesting to sketch!
I did this mixed media sketch in about 20 minutes of the shops along Langston Place with some background highrise. I really enjoyed doing this – loosely making marks with Neocolors, Poscas and my fude pen.
Earlier, I sketched in a cafe called Common Coffee…
and later that day, I drew a map documenting the areas I explored and all the things that are no longer there.
I also did a little digging into the archives of this blog and have put together a few of my sketches from Epping. They date from the first few years after I left my full-time job as an architect, and it’s amazing the memories and feelings that these sketches evoke.
Buildings along Oxford St
A few churches
Morning Coffees
Local Houses
I would like to return to Epping again soon, walk down more memory lanes and do some more sketching!

What an interesting mix of images and thoughts. The capacity to review the history of your work is one of the great benefits of your dedicated and helpful ‘tagging’ system that you have incorporated into your blog. Thank you for doing that. I especially loved the first and last sketch in this post.
The first showing the wonderful ways you are using crayons, markers and Fude pen. So effective and dynamic Liz! And the last the wet in wet house is gorgeous! It has depth and is super evocative. Not a watery mess at all!
And a bunch of flowers! I love trying to capture vases of flowers and never seem quite happy with my results. So wonderful to see you sketching one. Very inspiring.
Hi Liz
Apart from 11:11 being a thing for me, your sketch on Wednesday 11-11 is one of my all time favourites. I love the simplicity of just a few hints of colour on the steeple roof, and the great overall combination of colours.
I love how a sketchbook can hold memories and history for us in such interesting and beautiful ways! I’m always amazed when I look back over previous volumes of sketchbooks! I am so grateful you share your reviews with us, too!
Yes totally Jamie!
You are a continual inspiration Liz. Thank you for sharing your work regularly – I love seeing what you’re up to and where you’re travelling – many of the places you visit are well-known to me.
Thanks Kristen – its very cool when you know the places!
That white coffee cup, from the archives, with a touch of turquoise and purple shadows is so cool.
I’ve been sketching your sketch and learning a lot. So fun.
Thank you, Liz!!!
THanks Lois – I remember well doing that sketch and being happy with it at the time!
