Last week: Sketches at home and from Brisbane

November 23, 2016 | 4 Comments

As promised, here are the pages from my sketchbook as discussed in Vlog 3. It is fun to flip through the pages, but it is always really interesting for me to see them side by side as well and compare my compositional choices from spread to spread.

So here are the sketches from my current daily sketchbook – Stillman and Birn 8 x 10″ Softcover Alpha. Oh, I am looking this book so much!

And here are the sketches from my first work trip to Brisbane a few weeks ago (just before my Sabbatical Week). These were done in the 5.5 x 8.5″ size, which I also really loved using at the time.

It is interesting to compare how I use the two different size books and I am generally working smaller in the bigger book!

I still have 2 or 3 weeks left in my current book, but after I have finished it, I’m going to switch it up and use other size/format.

Do you like sticking to the one size and format, or are you always mixing it up?

Hi Liz. I’m enjoying your vlogs very much. I’m always looking for the ‘perfect’ sketchbook-size, paper, binding. Mine range in size from 3×5 inches (A7?) to 9×12 (A4?) and I’ve tried so many different brands. So many to choose from!

Have you just run a sketching course in Brisbane? How can we keep up with when you next might be coming north? I would love to attend a workshop.

You are so inspiring especially seeing what you sketch….a coffee cup, a bag…..I am too caught up in the still life sort of thinking and so never get around to it. You have inspired me to try to do a sketch a day using what is around me. I also find making that first mark on the paper so difficult….in case I stuff it up….a throw back to
my primary school ‘art lessons’ in the 1950’s where if your painting went up on the wall you had succeeded. It’s a bit of a hard step to take.

Hi Lindsey – thanks for your note. Yes, its so easy to make a ‘proper sketch’ become a barrier to starting.
I am up in Brisbane for private workshops for an architectural firm – and up and back in a day, so not available for general workshops at the moment. Hopefully, next year if these architectural workshops continue I might be able to extend a visit and offer a general workshop, but my schedule this year has been too packed to fit anything extra in. First notification of any general workshops will be via my monthly newsletter – you can subscribe for that via the signup box on the sidebar.
