Vlog 3: No time for sketching?

I am enjoying putting these vlogs together so much, that even though I didn’t take a camera with me everywhere last week, I will share another quick flick through.

Notes:

  1. Blogpost mentioned in video about my layout strategy.
  2. I will post photos of the sketches tomorrow!
  3. Link for email subscribers is here – or click on the image above (it should work this week!)

Takeaway:

Another busy week with very little time for sketching and most of my sketches were made up once again of little moments – waiting for a train, in the taxi etc – so I do have a record of my week, but none of the sketches have been proper ones – ie. telling myself “let’s sit down and sketch for 30 minutes”.

But that’s ok, as I have been loving this 8 x10 Stillman and Birn Alpha softcover and the compositional options it gives me. So even though my sketches aren’t that exciting I can make a nice spread by adding text and thinking about composition. That’s one of the best things about working in a sketchbook as a journal – it’s more about the narrative than producing a masterpiece on each page.

This week’s challenge: Actually schedule some time each day to sketch!

What about you, do you have a specific time to sketch each day?
Are you going to set yourself some dedicated time this coming week?

Thanks Liz, another interesting vlog filled with inspiration for us that don’t sketch as much as we ought. I just wanted to ask – to make the ruled lines in your notebook – do you use a stencil? Thanks.

Hi Liz…don’t have a dedicated time for sketching – would like to, but often I let “junk” get in the way. Too much time spent staring at the screen of my MacBook; oh how I wish i could get back to an empty mail box. I’ve had a print of your post re: “Empty In-box” blu-tacked to my wall as a prompt. I don’t like to remind myself how long it’s been there with little action (I’m the subject in the line “I put the ‘pro’ into procrastination”).
I’ve often caught the train to Milson’s point and waited for mine to come over the bridge, and not thought of doing a quick sketch – thanks for this – I’ll take it as a challenge.

Ah! its so much nicer waiting at milsons point isn’t it? And in regard to zero inbox – I have a reply folder that emails go into… but it makes me feel so much clearer to have a processed inbox.
All the best with both challenges!

I’m not nearly as busy as you are, Liz, 🙂 but when I know I have a busier-than-usual day ahead and am afraid I won’t have time to sketch, I just do it first thing — before I even turn on my laptop (ok, I do peek at my phone first). It actually makes me relax to draw first, makes me focus, if only for a few minutes, and then I can get on with it.

Every Tuesday I meet my friend Carole Ann and we sketch whatever catches our fancy. Sometimes it is great and sometimes it’s just tea and a few lines on the page. Whatever happens, we urge each other on and hope for the best.

Received the Rosemary and Co. newsletter recently and you’re in it. Congratulations and thanks for sharing your setup board. I’m a lefty too so I’m going to try it.

    • Liz Steel says:

Thanks Dottie. It’s a honor to be asked to contribute to it.
Yes as a leftie I put my water conditioner on the left. Righties might do the opposite
