Sketching Manchester

August 2, 2016 | 2 Comments

Well, I was right when I wrote my last update – things were just about to get very very hectic. I haven’t had the chance to get enough sleep in the last week let alone switching on my laptop and preparing a brief article for you. But today (Monday) I was just so tired that I stopped sketching at 3pm and came back to my hotel room to see if I could get something up.

If you have been following me on facebook or instagram (links below) then you will know how crazy Manchester has been in the lead up to and the four days of the Urban Sketchers Symposium. I have done a fair bit of sketching, but for me the symposiums are all about the people. So I have spent more time catching up with old friends, meeting new sketchers and talking art than I have recording every place in the city!

I really love Manchester – it has a great collection of buildings and the remnants of its industrial past have been integrated into modern developments in interesting ways. A great city for a symposium, although the weather has been challenging.

The opening image is a sketch of John Rylands Library – the subject for my USK Symposium workshops – but more about that next time.

My last update finished with a visit to the Art Shop with Paul this is what I did after that…

A quick sketch of the Corner Barber Shop opposite the art store and then a simple line drawing of Manchester Cathedral draw from a table at a tearoom called Proper Tea.

And here is my proper tea.

Tea-with-Suhita
Monday: Other sketching friends kept arriving – a tea and building near Town Hall.

A corner building in the northern quarter – now sketching with Nina from Sweden and Liz from Paris as well.

My version of the most sketched building last week –  Peveril of the Peak – the pub that was the venue for the evening ‘drink and draws’. This was the only day I was there – mainly just to say hi to people!

Architectura;-tour
Tuesday: Simone organised a fantastic introductory tour of Manchester by Phil Griffin.

I sketched non stop during it – filling a number of pages with quick sketches such as these.

PalaceHotel-Sketch
Another much sketched building was the Palace Hotel on Oxford St.

Oxford-St-sketchers
Many sketchers walked past us – some joined in. The city was well and truly coming alive with sketchers!

Wednesday morning: We started our early morning sketching routine exploring the Castlefield area – old mills, railway bridges and canals.

It was then time to head to the faculty meeting as the symposium was about to start… so stay tuned for more tomorrow!
