A day at Castle Howard

July 20, 2016 | 3 Comments

Today I spent from 11am-4.30pm at Castle Howard, one of my favourite places in the UK.

I thought a full day there would be a nice relaxed way to give myself a nice ‘me-day-treat’ but it turned out to be frantic (not enough time to have a break for lunch) and a scorcher of a day (the temperature was 32C!)

Anyway, I am too tired to write much tonight so I thought I would simply share what state my pages are at right now – it’s 9.30pm. I still have a few more notes to write and a bit of paint to add to the hall sketch.

Aside: I am really surprised how easy it seems to be this trip to keep up to date with finishing my pages off – notes and maps etc. Some trips it is a real struggle and I have a lot of homework when I get home. The real test however will be next week during the symposium!

And here are the rest of the ‘hero shots’ taken on location:

You might also want to read the report of my last visit to Castle Howard in 2009, and some other Castle Howard drawings done when back home after my first visit in 2000. This second one describes a lot of the architectural features of the buildings on the estate, including the incredible approach to the Castle.
