BCN.UK.2013: Getting to BCN

Here are the first batch of pages from my recent trip to Barcelona for the Urban Sketchers Symposium and then 2 weeks in the UK.

As the notes say, although I have been blogging a lot this year, I have not been out on the streets during serious sketching much… and so personally felt out of touch.

Because sketching for me is all about the process, the way I am feeling at the time, my goal for the days before the symposium was to get myself into an internal state that I refer to as ‘being in the groove’… where I feel the eye and hand feel coordinated and my artwork is just flowing. I must also add that this ‘in the groove’ state comes only through ‘doing’ …

I have also been experimenting a lot in the past 12 months, so I was unsure what media to use and was looking forward to seeing whether I would revert to my old tried and true ink and wash….what was my ‘reflex sketching” mode going to be like. One thing for sure, I was expecting to hit the ground running and that I would be constantly surrounded by other sketchers who I was keen to chat up with and watch in action (how was I going to be able to keep up with it all!)

Sketching during my long journey of 40 hours (door to door) is all part of this process of getting ready….

My first sketches in Barcelona and a few photos below from this first day with sketchers from Sydney, Singapore, Bangkok, Penang, Portugal and a few locals!
