Balmoral Sketching Week 2 Line

October 18, 2013 | Leave your thoughts

Week 2 of my October class at Balmoral. Looking at line today and how different tools create different lines. And in particular exploring whether there are any ‘fast tools’.

I am a great believer that it is good to have a tool in your daily kit (or a specific technique) that you can use for sketching fast. Knowing you have this and making sure your sketching and tool are always handy… helps you seize half opportunities and turn them into sketches. A great book that I have had for years (and is hard to great these days) is David Rankin’s Fast Sketching Techniques.

Shared lots of ideas for using thick pens, water soluble tools and ways of simplifying scenes so that you get that sketch done that captures the moment in a fun and spontaneous way. We did some 5 minute exercises sketching my boxes (each week they have slightly different appearances)

Once again great work by everyone …I was very cruel and only gave them limited time – such variety and a lot of risk taking!! So much else we could have done as well but at least this morning was a start.

Next week we get to use our paints… cant wait.

Just a reminder if you are in Sydney:

Sketchcrawl in Hyde Park tomorrow. https://lizsteel.com/2013/10/41st-worldwide-sketchcrawl-details.html

My November Classes will be in The Rocks focusing on Sketching Architecture:
Thursday mornings (plenty of spaces available)
Friday mornings (might be some more spots available soon!)
A full day workshop on Saturday 30 Nov (filling up fast!)
