TasTrip14: First two days in Hobart

June 13, 2014 | Leave your thoughts

Ok… the big scan has begun. I am just going to post quickly this trip with just a brief description of each sketch and then hope to wrap up with some more detailed posts after the bulk is done.

Day 1: Starting on the plane as usual and doing my kit for the trip. First use of the new stock Moleskine – more detailed review to follow.

Hobart: Wonderful soup at a very cool cafe Basket & Green and then well starting with the most iconic part of Hobart – Salamanca Place. The lovely warehouses that form the background to the famous markets (missed the markets both Saturdays in Hobart this trip!)

Re-doing the sketch of the old Bank building designed by Butler. I think it is now housing Heritage Tasmania. Did this in the fading light and rain!
And some simple sketches over dinner at Fish 349. North Hobart is a very handy place to be staying near – so many great restaurants in a small area.

Day 2: Hobart. Start with a tea from a cafe renowned for great coffee! Pilgrim Coffee. It was a slow morning so I wanted to get my teeth into a serious architecture sketch….

The Town Hall – sat in the shade to sketch and got very cold…needed some soup to warm up!

A few hours in TMAG (Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery) in preparation for my workshop there. These were a few objects on the ground floor galleries done in watercolour pencils with watercolour added later.

The crazy staircase in the main atrium (none of the edges are parallel, vertical or horizontal) and then out in the lovely museum courtyard.

One more sketch in the courtyard and then despite being very cold I did one more crazy sketch of the front facade of TMAG on the waterfront side.

So cold that I need another cafe visit- the only one that I could find that was still open was Pilgrim Coffee so went back. Quiet evening in my B&B room and ended up sketching my chair.
