TasTrip14: Heading North along the Heritage Highway

June 17, 2014 | Leave your thoughts

Sad to leave Hobart…but it was nice to get out on the road and have two crazy Liz-style sketching days. First day was traveling to Deloraine along the Heritage Highway. I wanted to stop at 4 different towns along the way.

First stop: very quick loose exploratory sketch of St Marks Pontville by James Blackburn. I love this cute building very much and could spend a whole day sketching it and the surrounding village!

Next: Kempton. Re-tracing my steps from last trip and re-doing two sketches of the churches in the town. St Peters and St Marys. The one of St Marys was done in minutes – definitely one of the fastest sketches I have done for a long time. Once again – I wanted to stay longer…..

Third stop: Ross. Ah! love this place!
Headed straight to the Ross Bakery Inn to try the worlds best vanilla slice… ended up having a scone as well and then enjoyed a sketch inside the kitchen – recording the 160 year old oven! Thanks to the amazing staff for a special time!

Once again, repeating a spread from 2008. The town hall building, then the famous and most beautiful Ross bridge (by John Lee Archer!!!) as the weather started to become threatening. And once again… I needed to move on (the days are short in winter)

Campbell Town. Quick sketch of The Grange from the carpark – a late lunch (only drawing it so you all know that I just don’t eat cake!) and later I sketched the Foxhunter’s Return. This is an amazing Georgian building – quite a few nice design features which I only appreciated while I was sketching it.

Another famous bridge… the Red Bridge (ah! James Blackburn strikes again!)
And a busy night starting to prepare a lecture for later in the week.
