Brown Ink

October 25, 2014 | 9 Comments

I was wondering if anyone noticed my use of brown in a few days ago…
Anyway I am VERY excited that I have finally got in my hand some permanent /waterproof brown ink in a lovely shade.

I have been in touch with De Atramentis Inks in recent months, telling them how much the sketching world loves permanent inks and how many of us have wanted a nice brown that was readily available. You can read a little more about it here

Some of you will know that I am a bit of a brown person. I wear dark brown instead of black (though in recent years have been wearing more blue dresses due to the difficulty in finding any brown material!) Writing in brown fountain pen is something that I did a LOT late teenage/ early 20s. It was one of my distinctives at uni (I have always been a little odd).
Having a beautiful brown in my pen has special significance for me.

Anyway…more later but here are the first few spreads with the Document Brown.

Please note: It has to be Document Brown.
The archive ink- now re-names Permanent Ink is also suitable for watercolour over the top. But colours in their other ranges are not.
I am not sure of the stock in Australia – this was ordered from Goulet Pens in the States.

You might be also in Jane Blundell’s review of brown inks.
And ironically just recently another one of my local friends Wendy Shortland was raving about a nice brown ink from Noodlers Brown #41.
BTW Noodlers Polar Brown never quite hit the spot for me.

Thanks for this info. The brown is out of order (who was wandering if we read your post???) so i'll have to wait. Cannot wait untill the 12th november.

Ok comment take2 – I have been using Noodler's #41 Brown in my Konrad Flex pen for a while now and love the colour and the way it behaves. If I want a wash I use a water brush while the ink is still damp or take some fresh ink off the nib of the pen. Looking forward to trying the De Artramentis inks, I have some samples on the way!
    Also eager for 12th November!

  • I also prefer brown to black or navy. Anyway, I am never sure if you are using ink or watercolor on your pages and I guess I didn't catch the writing in brown ink. I love seeing it though, Liz.

thanks Belle2create. I am guessing that it would have been popluar.
And I cant wait till Nov 12 too!

Yes brown is so much nicer than black!

thanks Carol! I would like to try #41 one day…but honestly I don't need to do I????

  • I have both – De Atramentis Document Brown and Noodlers Brown #41. Both beautiful and yes the Noodlers Brown #41 is water-resistant (takes just a couple of seconds to dry).

I have recently discovered some new waterproof inks that are suitable for pens: the “sketch ink” range by Rohrer&Klingner. I have black (“Lotte”), an oliv-ey green (“Emma”), and a reddish brown (“Jule”), and I’m quite pleased with them
