Last week: Coffee, fountain pens and violet ink

December 14, 2015 | Leave your thoughts

I know that a lot of my readers think I live a dream life, and to be honest it is pretty amazing what my ‘work’ can sometimes entail. But like everyone I have tough weeks and there are a lot of things behind the scenes that I keep to myself and are not even hinted at in a cryptic way in my notes. And just for the record,  I never put really negative dumps in my sketchbook – what I am feeling at the time is often encoded in my linework but I never write anything that will be unpleasant to read down the track. All that can been seen is some wonderful watercolour pigment on the page – images to make me smile and/or remember!

The week just past had some challenges for me and I felt at times like I wasn’t getting any where, but once again when I look back it wasn’t so bad and there are always so many things to be thankful for. One of the interesting aspects of sketching my life is that I have a visual diary of bits and pieces from the week and regardless of whether I felt that I sketched as much as I wanted to, I still have a record of what I was able to do.

But how much of the real story does it tell? This is what I am really interested in at the moment.

Right now I am feeling a little frustrated that I am not sketching out on location as much as I would like, but it just doesn’t seem to be an option. I feel that my pages this week are, once again, a bit repetitive, but in fact, they represent a surprisingly accurate snapshot of what I really did!

– Morning cafe visits
– Drawing my fountain pens for my current series
– Testing all my pens
– Working on my fountain pen blog series and drawing more of my fountain pens
– Testing out a new ink in the De Atramentis Doucment range – Violet
– Testing out the new WN pigment markers during a morning cafe visit
– A meeting in the city – sketching while waiting and on the ferry but rushing the rest of the day
– Testing out a new pen that I ordered a few weeks ago – it is a complete coincidence that it is a perfect match for the new ink!
– Drawing more pens for tomorrow’s post

Ok you get the message!

As for the December Daily collage intention – some days it’s fun and other days I find that it requires an extra effort that I just don’t have the time for. I know that I am a little bit of a cracked record, but I think it’s worth repeating: what I love so much about sketching is that it is done and completed in the moment. So for me, if I can sketch while I am doing things it is SO much easier to be sketching regularly.

And that’s about it this week…. keep scrolling to the end for some new tools that are not related to fountain pens.
