The day before the day before! The city was coming alive with sketchers.... very exciting.
However, I had the most wonderful afternoon out of the city- with an Australian friend and 2 Dominican boys - at the beach. This included waiting 2 hours at my hotel (getting used to Dominican time!) which was just the best time as it gave me a chance to do some more sketches.
Here ends Volume 1 of my sketchbooks.
The breakfast room at Hotel Frances (only a day of so left before I check out so pressure to sketch everything!)
Combined map page of our adventures
We visited the area where all the museums were- pity they were all closed on Monday! However we all enjoted sketching the outside of the Museo De Arte Moderno
First meal of Dominician food- beans and rice!
Down to the ocean- the Malecon
Hospital Nicolas de Bari runis - quick sketch before meeting up for dinner

Map page (being able to access google maps on the iphone is handy!) and experimenting with mixes of the colours of Santo Domingo.
Alcazar de Colon- Sketch of the home of Columbus - the oldest house in the Americas. I rushed this as the sun came out and it was getting hot!
Inside Alcazar de Colon- Very quick sketches standing up/ walking through the museum... loved it in here!
City Wall - Experimenting with different ways of drawing/painting stone. It was hot and extremely humid- a storm about to hit I think....
Panteon -Getting hungry but one more sketch- surely I can do that. Inside a very nice church which wasn't that cool inside (sadly) I realised doing this sketch that I should have a warm grey WC pencil with me for church interiors and am very thankful that Jessie brought me one a few days later. I add a little WC pencil inside the church and then added watercolour over the top later. Fun to draw spaces like this!
Hotel Frances Courtyard - This is one of my favourite sketches of the trip. I rarely fill the spread with a single sketch... I am really pleased that this captures the feeling of the verandah- I sat here a lot in the first few days finishing pages.
Fortaleza Ozama A real scribble without much thought- painted later in the same mood!
A quick (but slower) sketch of the fort- while talking to a guide and a guard who were amazed at someone sketching ('be prepared to see a few more soon!")
San Francisco again - I was not very happy with this sketch ...trying not to be too hard on myself as I was still lacking in sleep and a little jetlag-shaky.
View from SanF steps - Trying to sketch and paint a little slower and as I had no one to talk to - I chatted away to my sketchbook... recording my thoughts
Yes... drawing my food... I am in the compulsive sketching mood now
Can't believe how big my room was. It was really great to stay here in the days before the symposium. I was also glad was to move down to the Mercure with everyone else when the event started (the bigger room would have been a waste since I spent very little time in the mercure)

Feeling a little shaky (lack of sleep) and first time in a developing country with no spanish... so I took it easy...still sketched my breakfast but used a waterbrush. More details of breakfast and my hotel coming up....
Text says it all... rather overwhelmed by this experience - unsure how safe it was and not able to be totally aware of my possessions, try to speak to Spanish speaking people and sketch at the same time.... so I retreated into the quietness of the cathedral precinct
Sketch from the quiet but hot courtyard to the south of the cathedral...
Back inside to the cool for one more sketch before retreating to the coolness of my beautiful hotel room (I didn't let myself have an afternoon nap)
After resting in the middle of the day I came back to the cathedral and attempted this complex scene... I am amazed that I attempted this!
A service was about to start so I went outside the sketch the magnificent west facade... having fun!
Wandered up the hill to the setting for Marc's workshop - lovely and quiet (except for the delightful noise of children reciting a poem and singing) Lovely spot
Ok, in sketching mode when I do the "just one more sketch" What a day!
Too unsure of myself to eat out in public so I had an early dinner in the lovely setting of the hotel courtyard - the beautiful Hotel Frances.
What a day!!! (after putting this post together, I find it hard to believe that I did all these sketches in one day under such conditions....)

Back home... Unpacking done (more or less) and now I have the fun job of scanning 3 and a bit sketchbooks. For those of you that saw my trip prep calculations... I wasn’t sure if I would need the 4th book. Well I did – started it on Monday and have now filled 16 spreads. I DO want to slow down...but I just seem to get faster and more addicted to sketching.
Good to get back to work tomorrow and back to normal life!
