Catching up of EDiM

yes, I have been slack about posting here again...

so here is last weeks pages.

EDiM 10 Fashion Inspiration
A few months ago I had the idea to focus my people sketching on the clothes they are wearing since as a teenager I spent a lot of time drawing outfits and an imaginary wardrobe.

I had real fun drawing these from a reference fashion sketching book... I have made them 'Liz sketches' by the colours I used!(my friends will probably have realized this straight away!) I am quite happy with this and got a bit of buzz doing it - though I am not sure that I would wear the coat on the right!
EDiM 11a Three green heads
Don't know why I did these all green...

Very quick sketches during my lunchbreak....I need to be more careful when I do eyes.

EDiM 11b Even More
I really love this book - the variety of faces is wonderful. I am using this as warmups for sketching on location and therefore work as quickly as I can.

I kinda forgot that this paper isn't great with watercolour and you only get one go! Therefore we have a serious case of overworking happening on this spread...
but hey its may... and we all post it anyway!

EDiM 12a People and Buildings
Mixing it up ( my last building sketch was a LONG time ago...)
The people in the foreground, looking like people rather than blobs is the main point of the exercise. The building is secondary! (Now I have NEVER said that before!?!)

I did this late Monday night and posted early Tuesday morning as today is my busy day at work

BTW, photo from Rome Baroque church just near the forum SS Luca Martina I think!

EDiM 12b An Eye
I am on a roll... even on a non stop day like today was I still managed a quick page late at night during a cuppa!

EdiM 13a Lunchtime Sketches
Another spread of quick sketches... including a funny face. Mark Simon's book is 95% people pulling faces. I have only been doing the simple mug shots so far. Just when I was about to get back to work I realised that I had missed a page - better remedy that straight away!

EDiM 13b Rough Ref Page
Ok... here is a really rough 'working page'... done in ink with no pencil to the sketches in the pink area (I think pencil would have been a good idea!)

As the notes on the page indicate I had a plan of doing something different and drawing some legs/feets today at lunch ... but when I went to 'read up' first, while eating my lunch, I was a bit overwhelmed by the complexity of the pages in JH's book. There are 18 pages!!!! Hence the quick sketches posted earlier - instead.

There is something about Wednesdays in May... feeling like this is all too hard again (but I still managed 3 pages!) And next week I start Kate Johnson's class on Watercolour Pencils...

So tonight I took a drastic step!!! I removed some of the pages remaining in my book (sits better now due to the slight buckling of paper) and now I can ONLY do one page. I know the number of pages is not an issue...but I did want to fill the whole book - now I will!

EdiM 14 Wating for My Lunch
My one page spread for today -incorporating the result of my Jack Hamm research last night and a quick sketching while waiting for my lunch. Sketching people in cafes is really quite addictive... There is a certain thrill associated with gauging how quickly they will get up and move and also not getting caught sketching!

I don’t know why ... But I am having terrible trouble with my noodlers ink lately – it normally does not run like this!

EDM 15 Self portrait with trench
Another busy day got this one done early (only an hour short of finishing on the allotted day!)

I have to admit that my first attempt wasn’t successful so I did a second version on one of the pages I pulled out yesterday and stuck it in.

Inspired by Paris Breakfast post...

Although I wear the big scarf all the time (not shown)I am afraid that I am never going to achieve Paris style as missing Converse-like shoes (do they come in brown?), the jeans (I am a skirt girl) and the big bag (my bag is heavy enough when it is small!)

EDiM 16 Bride and Groom
Here is a really quick sketch that I did this morning - would have made a great photo with the couple backlit with sun against the shadows of the gothic building... doing a quick sketch of it is quite another thing!

EDiM 17 Bad Hair Day?
My page for the 17th
My goal for the coming week is to focus a bit more on the colouring aspects - I am ending up with some murky faces when I add watercolour. Using a book that I borrowed from the library. Don't really like the work in it but so good tips. THis treatment of hair I remember from the first time I borrowed it

090515 Friday night cuppa

Inspired by Olha's cups, I just had to draw a cup... it seems like ages since I have drawn one.
Loose and messy but oh! so much fun!!! Fairly meaningless text on the side... a sign that it has been a big day, a big week for me at work.

I have been slack posting to this blog again. Check out my flickr is you want to keep up to date with my Every Day in May pages!

090509 More EDiM...

Looking into the future...
EDiM 09a Looking towards the future
this is how my best friend's 3 year old will look like in 10 years time! Sound convincing? Ok, to be honest, I knew when I was drawing with the ink that the head and the features were too small - hopefully next time I will get it right!?!

After just over one week of Every Day in May I am VERY EXCITED that the silly fear I had of drawing people seems to have gone. Sure, I can't yet achieve a likeness and still have so much to learn... but I am just happy to have a go now. I didn't feel the dread sketching Nick which I would have a few months ago!

Thank you everyone for your encouragement and inspiration. Without my e-friends this would not have happened!
EDiM 09b Drawing Session1
Last week, while I was sketching the tree, I mentioned that something exciting happened! The wife of a cartoonist/ people sketcher walked past and then he came out for a chat. Well today we had a drawing session. The caricature on the left is his work and mine on the right. Got some tips and great to have a willing model!
EDiM 09c Drawing Session2
On the left at J's suggestion, I painted first and added the ink lines later. On the right my brush pen again.
090509 Another Tree
Was a lovely afternoon and I had a few minutes spare to sketch the tree in the backyard - the same species as the tree I drew last Saturday. There are quite a few in our street.

090507 Visit to T2 tearoom again

090507 t2 Tearoom

Here is my page that I did last night at my favourite tearoom. I didn't quite finish the painting as they closed their doors and I thought I better leave. So I added the rest of the paint tonight.

Yet again, a different pot, cup and saucer from last visit. The pot on the left page was my 'table number'. The floral decoration was what was on the red saucer! I know I don't need to say this AGAIN... but I LOVE this place.

Doing these sketches certainly loosens me up for drawing people...even I am rather amazed at how fast and loose I do these sketches and once in the mood....

EDiM Day 8

EDiM 08a Bad Habits
A light bulb moment last night when I had to hide a woman’s profile with the floating lemon tart... This page is a bit of an exaggeration but I think it is a trap that I have been finding myself fall into.
EDiM 08b Lunch
Also, I realised last night trying to do work in two journals at the same time – that the object of this month’s challenge is to start to include people into my sketches – doesn’t have to be exclusively people... Because I would feel totally deprived if I stopped drawing cups of tea and food.
EDiM 08c Final Quick Sketch
My third light bulb moment for the day is that I have a problem having to do 2 pages... But three (or even more perhaps??) is no problem...but of course there is no virtue in the number of pages that you do!

EdiM 07 MORE pages!!!

EDiM 07B_Cafe Sketching1
Anita was certain, that after my resolution to only do one spread per day, I would still do two today! Well, she was right... and wrong. I did 3!! (In fact there is another 3/4 completed sketch in my daily sketchbook of the cup, saucer and pots from tonight's cuppa after late night shopping!... as people are taking priority I took a photo of my cup in order to finish this page tomorrow!)

There is no doubt that determination and practice is helping me... the total fear is not there anymore... but I am still realizing that there is still some left brain interference- especially with the profile! (the floating lemon tart is hiding the evidence of this!)
EDiM 07C_Cafe Sketching2
And I did this one just before everyone left... amazing how eccentric you feel when you write down your then feel like you were actually having a conversation with yourself.
I LOVE this tearoom (as you all know) but it is a pity that so many objects in it are black... and now that we are heading towards winter most of the people are wearing black.

EDiM 07 Boring Dark suits

EDiM 07 Boring Dark Suits
Jack Hamm has another 2 pages on noses!!! (obviously it is the most important feature!) But I am having a break from drawing them and just enjoying looking at all the wonderful specimens in Rick Tulka’s book which arrived yesterday.
The stress from yesterday was mainly due to work... So today at lunch I turned to the back of Jack’s book and did some ultra quick sketches using my beloved pentel pocket brush. This is the first time I have done quick gesture sketches using this pen... It was fun!
Graphitint pencil added at the end

EDiM Day6

EDiM 06b Reference More Noses
Copies from Jack Hamm's book! Which one describes you?

EDiM 06A_Quick Sketch
I did this sketch at lunchtime... along with the noses. The 'stress' I was feeling at the time seems to be expressed in this sketch. I just have too much going on at the moment and yet I WANT to spend the month drawing people. I am starting to feel the pressure of this challenge and have a lot of chores that I really should be doing.... but of course I would prefer to draw!!
But I did manage to find some time tonight while having my cuppa to touch this page up and add some colour. Ok, now for some chores!

I have decided to drop back to one spread a day! I probably will still end up doing two pages...

EDiM Day 5

EDiM 05a_Noses from Todays Meetings
I was flat out today- no lunch break and 3 back to back meetings. However, after last nights inspiration, I found myself naturally observing the noses around the table. Although I always had the project manager sitting right next to me, I managed to sneak a few scribbles in the back of my work notebook - these I unsuccessfully transferred on the right page and then drew up on the left.
EDiM 05B_From TV
Tonight, I sketched and painted while watching TV - I would never have attempted anything this risky in the past... the results are a bit scary but I am having fun...although at the same time already feeling the pressure of a daily challenge (and my self imposed double spread per day goal ...why do I do these things to myself?)

EDiM 02,03,04

EDiM 02b_Reference Mouth
As I am hoping to do 2 spreads per day... my plan of attack is to sketch from life at lunchtime and at night to doing reading/research from the various reference books. Here is a random page on mouths

EDiM 03a_Four Faces
I don't sketch on Sundays (a day off) so Saturday is a double day...
If I can't get out to sketch from life I am going to sketch from the book mentioned on this page. Working quick and loose with only basic pencil setup.
The book arrived yesterday - what timing! It has a great variety of faces.

EDiM 03b_Reference Fashion Illustration
I have a book on fashion illustration. There is something in the structured and stylized approach that clicks with my architect brain... though I am not using fashion proportions!

EDiM 04a Monday Lunchtime Quickies
Very quick sketches while waiting for my lunch and then eating it. As I am a leftie, I did the sketches from right to left. SO the two on the right are waiting for my thai lunch and on the left is in the park.
Very rough sketches meant very rough and quick watercolour splashed on obnce I got back to my desk and before I started my work for the afternoon

EDiM 04b_Reference The Nose
My reference page for day 4. I am not sure how long I will be able to keep up with 2 spreads per day... but I will try! Had fun with this page!

090502 Saturday...

090502 Chatswood Morning Tea
Shopping this morning and an opportunity to sketch some people...but first to get me in the mood... coffee and cake. I do think that drawing a cup or two before I attempt to draw people does help me loosen up.
EDiM 02a_CafeChatswood
So here are my efforts from this morning...I was in a rather open area so not really ideal to being inconspicuous - also I didn't really have much time (after sketching that cake and cuppas!)
090502 My favourite type of tree
This afternoon, I went and sat on my stool down the road sketching my favourite tree. Something always amazing happens when I sketch...I felt a bit self conscious about sitting in my own street sketching - after all someone that knows me might see me... this is in fact what happened! More of this later but let me say that the person I spoke to might just help in my Everyday in May challenge!

We don't have many (any?) native deciduous trees in Australia but we do have trees with deciduous bark. Mostly the gum trees lose their bark in spring/summer time. I absolutely love watching the colour of the Angophora change during the year. The swatches along the bottom are the colours throughout the year (the brand new yellow bark starts turning orange very quickly) The rich intense red colour of the twisted branches in the late afternoon early summer sun never ceases to excite me! So I promise in December to get out there and sketch one! I did do a quick sketch in November last year when the bark was starting to come off - here

090501 Friday Night Traffic

090501 Friday night traffic
Haven't had the opportunity to do one of these for a while now... this means that I have been driving home after the peak hour and not that the traffic has been good!

It will soon be too dark for me to see what I am doing... but I don't suppose that will stop me!

Everyday in May 01

Ok... here is the start of the monthly challenge for me.

EDiM 01_Blind Haircut
To start with I really didn't realize how poor my eyesight is, for the purposes of drawing, without the aid of my glasses. But still I made an attempt though my (new) hairdresser (this is only the second time she has cut my hair) thinks me a little odd!
EDiM 01_b Starting Self Portraits
Also I think it is important, however painful, to record at the beginning of the month where I am we can all see the incredible improvement at the is that for optimism. I really was NOT happy with these so I had fun going crazy with the rest of the page!
